Many pools use Governance Conference to schedule an informal dinner with people from another, similar pool. This is a great way to compare notes and build relationships. If you’d like help to identify another pool for this sort of gathering, let us know.

Keynotes include:

Hug Your Haters! Your Most Disconnected Members Hold the Key to Better Service (Monday, Mar. 4)

Customer service researcher and expert Jay Baer returns to AGRiP following his highly regarded and energizing presentation at Staff Forum 2023. This time, Jay will use his nearly 30 years of experience to share:

  • Why customer expectations are rising faster than ever and why the change should matter to  pools.

  • How to turn negativity — and even criticism — about your pool into an opportunity.

  • Common disconnects between how members and pools perceive customer service.

Be Conscious About Your Pool’s Culture (Tuesday, Mar. 5)

The bar is raised in terms of what people expect from the workplace. Employees are less willing to tolerate mediocre cultures and practices that don’t support their individual interests alongside organizational goals. Being conscious about setting and maintaining your pool’s culture is as important today as setting a financial or membership target!

In this provocative yet practical keynote, AGRiP’s 2024 Resident and award-winning author Jamie Notter will identify culture patterns that exist in every organization and talk about the importance of consciously building a culture that can be measured through real results — all in a matter of months, not years.

Session topics will include:

  • Proven methods to stop nuclear verdicts against public entities

  • Artificial intelligence and what it means for your day-to-day work

  • Weight loss drugs and plan design considerations

  • Understanding and responding to First Amendment audits

  • Managing crisis events in small communities

  • Successful SAM partnerships and programs

  • Mitigating pool risk through a questioning culture

  • Reinsurance and excess market updates for liability, property, employee benefits and workers’ compensation

  • Choosing a captive domicile and manager

  • Pool programs that mitigate property losses

  • Key actuarial concepts for pool governing body members to understand

  • Investment responsibilities of a governing body

  • Understanding your pool’s financial statements

  • Capital adequacy case study

  • The importance of ongoing education for pool governing bodies

  • Governing body self assessments and how to know if you’re doing a good job

  • Governing body succession planning

  • Common practices in top pool executive compensation and benefits

  • Pool compensation philosophies and why they matter in today’s employment market

  • Building your pool’s talent pipeline with scholarships and internships

Optional Programs (preregistration required)

  • Pooling Basics — People newer to public entity pooling – including governing body members – can learn the basics in this introduction to pooling. This day-long course helps put the purpose of pooling in context with a nod to our history but a focus on our current operating environment. You’ll be introduced to core pooling functions like underwriting, claims, risk management, finance, member services, and more. There’s also a discussion of key governance practices every governing body should know, and plenty of time to explore your unique pooling questions. This highly-rated curriculum is delivered by experienced faculty sharing examples from all lines of pool coverage, available only to AGRiP members. $250 per person.

  • [WAITLIST ONLY] Preconference Tour — Experience Nashville like a music star when you tour — and record a song — at RCA Studio B, the famous recording home of greats including Dolly Parton, Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Gillian Welch, and many more. (You’ll even get a CD of the song the group records to prove you are almost famous!) Then, it’s off to the Country Music Hall of Fame Museum to explore more legends of music. $75 per person (includes all entry fees and transportation). Check out this Spotify list with a sampling of songs recorded at Historic RCA Studio B. $75 per person. The preconference tour is sold out. Select the waitlist session to be notified in January if a spot opens or a second tour is added.

  • AGRiP Orientation Those newer to AGRiP should join other newcomers for breakfast with the AGRiP Board of Directors and a brief orientation to AGRiP services and activities, as well as to the conference.
