Advisory Standards for Recognition Now Include AI Best Practices

Effective Jan. 1, our Advisory Standards for Recognition have been updated to help pools address a rapidly changing environment of AI-enabled operations.

The updates support responsible AI use across the full spectrum of pool operations. AI-related considerations have been incorporated into existing standards for claims management, underwriting, service provider contracts, data security and business continuity. In addition, a new standard provides guidance for pools adopting AI more broadly.

As with all Advisory Standards, the updates account for a range of pool priorities, structures and operating environments. The standards are principle-based rather than prescriptive.

For pools seeking Recognition in 2026 and beyond, heres what to know:

  • The standards do not require pools to use AI. Instead, they require pools to identify whether and how AI supports their operations.

  • The standards require review of service provider contracts to ensure they address AI-related considerations, particularly data use, security and retention.

  • The standards require pools to adopt a written AI use policy that applies to anyone with access to pool systems or data.

Pools renewing Recognition under the updated standards will be expected to demonstrate active progress toward full compliance, but not to meet every standard in full at the time of renewal.

These changes to the Advisory Standards for Recognition reflect our commitment to supporting pools as they adapt to changing operational norms. If you have any questions, please reach out to Claire Torza.
