Pools recognized for innovative work at PRIMA’s Annual Conference

Two AGRiP member pools were recognized at the PRIMA 2019 Annual Conference for outstanding achievement in risk management. Minnesota Counties Intergovernmental Trust (MCIT) was acknowledged for its Quick Takes on Safety program and Michigan Municipal Risk Management Authority (MMRMA) received an honorable mention for its Rescue Task Force Model Protocol & Reality Based Training

MCIT’s innovative Quick Takes on Safety program provides mini training sessions for loss prevention through short scripts that serve as safety talks, reminding staff about safe work practices. Supervisors are encouraged to give the Quick Takes on Safety during regularly scheduled or informal meetings. Quick Takes scripts can be modified to reflect the needs of a specific workplace and are not designed to take the place of regular formal training.

Some Quick Takes topics include general safety, such as general ergonomics and severe weather; off-site settings, including dog and tick bite prevention; and data/cyber security, which has Quick Takes on data storage, password security, and phishing. Each Quick Take includes a script for the instructor and a handout for the employees. The scripts and handouts are available in Word so they can easily be edited to suit each workplace’s needs.

Quick Takes helps MCIT members keep safety in the forefront of employees’ minds, demonstrates a commitment to safety, and opens the door for employees to ask questions, discuss safety and develop solutions to specific hazards.

MMRMA’s well-earned honorable mention is based on its work in rescue task force model protocol and reality-based training. For nearly 15 years, MMRMA has worked with Michigan-based Tactical Encounters, Inc. to offer reality-based Tactical Encounters for Patrol Officers training to member law enforcement agencies. Each Tactical Encounters training session encompasses three full days, with limited classroom time and a focus on reality-based scenarios. Reality-based training is even conducted as late as midnight to more effectively simulate situations that occur during nighttime hours and low light.

Rescue Task Force training teaches Fire/EMS personnel how to better coordinate their efforts with law enforcement officers. The training covers two components: conducting rapid patient assessment, and how Fire/EMS personnel with be deployed and work together with law enforcement officers as an integral component of a rescue team.

Training with a high-stress component helps officers and other first responders get accustomed to making the best possible decisions during real-life encounters.

The PRIMA outstanding achievement award for an intergovernmental risk pool recognizes pools for products and programs that are notably innovative, timely and/or well received.

Congratulations to AGRiP member pools MCIT and MMRMA!
