Six pool staff complete collaborative leadership development program

Six staff members from three Washington pools have successfully completed a unique Risk Pool Leadership Development Program. The program started in July, 2016 and was developed in collaborative effort by Washington Cities Insurance Authority (WCIA), Enduris, Washington Counties Risk Pool (WCRP), Association of Washington Cities Risk Management Service Agency (AWC RMSA), Water and Sewer Risk Management Pool (WSRMP) and Washington State Transit Insurance Pool (WSTIP).

As part of a nine month experience, program participants took part in a leadership survey, webinars, visits to other pool board of director meetings, and a two-day leadership training session. In addition to individual work, participants completed a self-defined group project, "Pool Trek: The Next Generation," to identify methods to attract millennials to the pooling industry, increase staff retention, and blend the cultures of various generations in the workforce. 

Organizers of the leadership program drew on a number of resources, including experts in succession planning and adult education, other public sector employee development programs, and Pooling Basics online curriculum. 

"The pools who worked collaboratively to address leadership development needs within public entity pooling, and the program participants themselves, have set forth a great example," said Ann Gergen, AGRiP Executive Director. "The participants in this program have developed important skills, and have grown both personally and professionally."
