New Colorado law simplifies heart, cancer claims

A new law in Colorado allows firefighters to voluntarily participate in an accident-type policy that replaces the traditional work comp process for presumed cancers and speeds the resolution process, offering improved outcomes for everyone involved.  A similar voluntary program exists for firefighter cardiac claims.

The new law went into effect in July, and now has approximately 25 percent of the eligible paid firefighters and 10 percent of the eligible volunteer firefighters participating. Colorado Special Districts Property and Liability Pool facilitated discussions resulting in the collaborative solution, and manages both the heart and cancer programs.
